What is this study about?

The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), part of the U.S. Department of Education, is conducting a study with students who are in 4th grade to test new Reading and Mathematics survey questions for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). NCES needs to know whether the survey questions on the test are clear. Students’ input will help NAEP improve survey questions so that future students will understand them better. 

Session Information

We are scheduling participants for 90 minute in person sessions between now and Thursday, August 18th, 2022 at the EurekaFacts Testing Location in Rockville, MD.

Students must be entering into or recently finished 4th grade.

The study will happen at the EurekaFacts In-Person Testing Location in Rockville, MD.

Are there rewards or incentives for participating?

Yes!! For this particular study, the students will receive an incentive of $50 on the day of the event, after completing the study, and the student’s parent or guardian will also receive a $40 incentive as well as an additional $25 for transportation. For a total of $115

What will happen during the research interview?

Each participant will work through an early version of new NAEP survey questions in Reading or Mathematics. There will be more than one adult present during each research interview. A researcher will interview participants individually. The researcher will ask what participants were thinking as they completed the survey questions, whether they think the questions are clear and understandable, and whether they have any suggestions on how to improve the questions. EurekaFacts staff may record video for analysis and take notes about participants’ reactions to these questions. Participant feedback will be used to revise and refine the questions. No additional personally identifying information will be recorded or retained. Specific knowledge is not required, and participants’ responses will not be graded.  

Where will the research interviews take place?

In-person interviews, the research interview will take place at the EurekaFacts testing center, located in Rockville, MD.

How long will the research interview last?

The interview will last no more than 90 minutes and can be schedule at your convenience. 

Will information be kept private?

Each participant will be assigned a unique student identifier (ID), and at no time will his/her name be linked to any of his/her answers.  

All the information provided may be used only for statistical purposes and may not be disclosed, or used, in identifiable form for any other purpose except as required by law (20 U.S.C. §9573 and 6 U.S.C. §151). Video will be recorded for analysis, but no personally identifying information will be recorded or retained. 

Will the results go to the participating students’ schools?

Participants’ responses will not be disclosed to their schools and will not be linked to any personally identifiable information such as a school’s name.

What are the possible risks of being in the study?

There are no anticipated risks associated with participation in this study component other than a small degree of discomfort students might feel when responding to questions about the task during the interview.

Can participation end early?

Students’ participation in this study is completely voluntary. Students have the right to refuse to answer particular questions. Students may elect to withdraw from this study at any time with the knowledge that if they withdraw early, they forgo payment (unless withdrawal is due to an internet connectivity issue).
